Rui Alpalhão

Rui, a Portuguese national, is the founder and chairman of FundBox Holdings, a portuguese firm active in structuring and executing investments in alternative assets.

He started his career as an academic, and later took executive positions as a fund manager and head of equity research with Portuguese banks Totta (now part of Santander) and Caixa Geral de Depósitos. In 2002 he left Caixa to organize the management buy-in of an independent fund manager, which, as CEO, he grew from zero to €620 mn AuM under his FundBox brand. From 2013 on he focused on the management of FundBox’s proprietary portfolio of real estate and other alternative investments.

He holds a BSc degree in Economics and a Master’s in Business Administration from NOVA, and a PhD in Finance from the Lisbon University Institute, where he is an Adjunct Full Professor. He has published two books on investments and various papers in refereed international journals. Most of his research, including his master’s and doctoral thesis, focuses on initial public offerings and privatizations.
